Victoria's Secret Sexy Spring Eyes kit review

It seems like in the last year there’s been an influx of paint-by-numbers eye shadow palettes. You know what I’m talking about. A cute little palette that comes with instructions to utilize all of the shades in a look depicted on the cover. From what I’ve seen results can be mixed and they really don’t work for someone who isn’t already used to blending shadows for similar looks. That being said, there are a few that would make great gifts for someone that’s looking to build a make-up arsenal or add a little color to their repertoire.

Victoria’s Secret Sexy Spring Eyes is a cute little kit, retailing at $15, that comes with two eye-popping looks, one suitable for daytime and one for nighttime. You can choose to follow the instructions printed on the opening flap, or come up with your own unique make-up.

The shadows are pretty pigmented, but a little bit of primer  (used on the right-side streaks) wouldn't hurt, if you want to make them stand out and catch the light more.

I decided to try the first look (nighttime) out while wearing my contacts. This look will be especially nice on green/blue-eyed girls.

Tip: I didn’t much like the little brush that came with the kit. I would recommend using a higher quality, non-sponge tip brush, preferably one you’re already accustomed to. For the liner, use a stiff and thin angled brush that has a lot of control, as that liner is gel-going-on-liquid and could result in icky smudges otherwise.

The shadows are a little bit unmanageable once they’re actually on. Clear up any mistakes with a Q-tip dipped in eye make-up remover.

The end result, however? Totally worth it!

Let’s try out our other, less high-drama look. This one will flatter brown-eyed girls the most and is completely wearable to work or school.

Just a little dab of turquoise at the corners brings lots of color to this simple look.

The end result is pretty and warm, but not over-the-top.

In conclusion, this kit is worth having around and would be especially good for traveling or gifting, as you get two different and versatile styles in a slim little package that can fit in anywhere.

Final Verdict: Like it!

Ulta Eye Shadow Review and Swatches

I have a complicated relationship with Ulta brand cosmetics. On the one hand, I love that they’re budget friendly, frequently have good promotions, and come in a wide variety of colors. On the other hand, it seems that more often than not you’re getting what you pay for… and it can sometimes leave a little to be desired.

That being said, I’ve found myself with a pretty healthy (those darn promotions!!!) collection of Ulta shadows. These come in Shimmer, Matte, and Glitter finishes and offer a large range of colors from neutral to colorful.

The following swatches are applied twice, plain on the left side, with Urban Decay’s Primer Potion on the right. It’s pretty clear that if you want colors that are vibrant and pop, you can’t use these on bare lids. They can also, occasionally, be a little bit difficult to apply, but it varies from shade to shade.

*= Shade is no longer being sold through Ulta.com, but may be available in stores.

Amethyst                                    Love

Glamazon                              Ice Queen
Peacock                                   Deep Sea
There we have them. Though the colors are fun, I feel as if I’ve done a better job advertising the Primer Potion, rather than the shadows. That being said, if you like the colors there’s no need to not enjoy them. Just be willing to invest in a good eye base/primer, unless you’re a fan of the super-sheer look.

One final plus is that Ulta often includes these in Gift-With-Purchase promotions and they come in neat little quads that are amazing for travel.

Final Verdict: Like it!
